The Old Lock & Weir is a pub that everyone would describe as the perfect summers pub. Centered around a spacious beer garden, built right on the bank of the beautiful and picturesque river Avon. When you imagine having a cold refreshing pint on a warm summer's day, this picture-perfect pub is where you will be imagining it. Next door is another pub called the Chequers Inn, but for today we will stick to talking about The Old Lock & Weir.
Besides its stunning views, this pub is also well known for its £5 minimum purchase when using a card, a rarity nowadays. This restriction means you're buying a round for your table, or you're going to be double-parked (holding two drinks). You get what you pay for though at this pub, with a pint averaging around the £4.50 region, and for any draughts and bottled alcohol around £4.
The Old Lock & Weir, as it says in its name, is old. With a small interior and a few ceilings that you may have to duck for if you're on the taller side. However, this isn't necessarily a bad thing and adds to that traditional country pub feeling. Although the real benefits to this pub are its stunning location, we live in England, and staying outside is out of the question for half of the year. Taking into account, it's small interior and lack of tables is a must, especially on peak days and holidays.
In the summer though you will be treated to the fantastic views surrounded by luscious greenery in an idyllic setting with quaint walks either side of the pub. One direction along the river takes you towards Hanham, and in the other direction towards Keynsham. If you are drinking outside, which you most likely will be, you'll be given a plastic cup to prevent any broken glasses or theft. It's a small tradeoff for a pint in a picture-postcard location. It can get hectic in the hot summer evenings, meaning you may be forced to be standing around a bench or leaning against a wall.
This pub isn't hard to get to and has a considerable car par, with an overflow to an adjacent field if needs must. But this isn't always the case, as it sits right on the river it is liable to flooding when we get prolonged heavy rainfall, so it may be forced to close on the rare occasion.
Overall, this is a really good pub; but it only really shines in the summer. Therefore we're rating this pub 3.7 out of 5.
